One of Cornwall’s largest towns is the historic market town of St. Austell, which is only a few miles from the sea. It had been a significant mining town for generations, but it wasn’t until a discovery in the middle of the 18th century that the town began to gain notoriety. From the 18th century onward, the extraction of china clay became the town’s principal business and propelled its growth.
The town’s proximity to the impressive Eden Project, which is barely 2 miles away, may currently be its main lure. Today, Eden is without a doubt Cornwall’s most visited tourist destination.
Charlestown‘s charming harbour, where you can frequently see vintage sailing ships, serves as St Austell’s port.
The harbour has been used as the backdrop for several movies and television shows, including Poldark, and there is a small museum there that is open seasonally.
